Prospect Watch: The Rainers pulled ahead in the sixth, benefiting from an error by third baseman Mike Brosseau and poor execution on a delayed double steal that allowed a run to come in. El Paso had the bases loaded in the ninth before Mason McCoy was called out on strikes to end the game. … Yonathan Perlaza homered in his third consecutive game as he extended his on-base streak to 21 games. The switch-hitting outfielder has increased his OPS by 106 points over that stretch, edging into the top 15 in the PCL with a .893 mark on the year. … Luis Campusano had another big night, collecting three more hits. On the season, he has a 1.013 OPS and 30 extra-base hits in 59 games. As he has all year at the Triple-A level, the 26-year-old continues to hit and hit with power while rotating between catcher, first base, and DH. … Kyle Hart made his second consecutive appearance out of the bullpen, working 2.1 innings in relief of Logan Gillaspie. The lefty, who opened the year in the Padres’ rotation, retired all 11 batters he faced in a spot relief appearance for the big league club earlier this month, but has surrendered four runs on six hits and three walks in six innings out of the Chihuahuas’ bullpen. … El Paso has lost the first two games of the series.

Key Statistics: SS Francisco Acuña 1-for-4; RF Moises Gomez 1-for-3; RHP Victor Lizarraga (L, 2-7) 4 IP, 4 H, 4 R (2 ER), BB, 6 K; RHP Tyson Neighbors 1.2 IP, H, BB, 3 K

Prospect Watch: The Missions were held to a pair of singles for the second night in a row and are now working on a stretch of 19 innings without scoring a run. Already down in the fifth inning, errors on back-to-back plays by third baseman Devin Ortiz led to two unearned runs for starter Victor Lizarraga and put the game well out of reach. Despite picking up his seventh loss of the year, Lizarraga didn’t have a bad overall night, landing 43 of his 63 pitches for strikes. The righty stretched out to four innings for the first time since leaving a game in early June. After posting an 8.53 ERA through the first two months of the season, he has had much better results, even with limited workloads, pitching to a 2.22 ERA over 24.1 innings in his last eight appearances. He’s getting the stronger results despite walking 15 batters in that stretch. His walk rate has spiked up to an untenable 14.1% as his strikeout rate has fallen to 22% this year. Working in the zone more last year, he posted a 10.3% walk rate and 25.1% K rate. … Tyson Neighbors had another good outing, tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief while recording three more strikeouts. Neighbors has gone more than one inning in four of his five appearances this month. After giving up homers in three of his first five Double-A appearances, he has yet to allow a run in eight innings this month. It’s been a rapid climb for the Texas native who was selected in the fourth round of last year’s draft.

Key Statistics: SS Leo De Vries 1-for-4, 2B, RBI; Braedon Karpathios 2-for-4, BB; LF Kaden Hollow 1-for-2, RBI, 2 BB; RHP Eric Yost 5 IP, H, 2 BB, 5 K; RHP Garrett Hawkins (W, 7-1) 2 IP, 4 K
Prospect Watch: After a Lake County rally in the seventh inning tied the game and kept Eric Yost from a win, Leo De Vries gave the TinCaps the victory when he drilled a leadoff double to right in the tenth inning to plate the go-ahead run. The shortstop went into the break hot, but is just 1-for-8 with a pair of strikeouts in the first two contests since he returned from the Futures Game. ... Garrett Hawkins made sure the run held up, setting down the side to pick up his team-best seventh win of the year. Hawkins, 25, missed all of last year recovering from Tommy John surgery, but has been dominant in his return as a reliever. The 6-foot-5 Canadian has now tossed 29 straight scoreless innings across 22 appearances, which are both the longest streaks in TinCaps history and the longest active streaks in the sport. Over his two perfect innings Saturday, he struck out four more batters to lift his K rate on the season to a stellar 36.7%. Midwest League hitters, who are hitting just .129 against him, will be glad to see him move on to the Texas League in short order. … Yost turned in one of the system’s better starts of the season, allowing just one hit over five scoreless innings while striking out five. The righty ranks second in the Midwest League with a 2.69 ERA, though he has fallen off a little in June and July. Though his fastball is only average, the 22-year-old’s slider has continued to overwhelm High-A hitters in a breakout season for the 17th-round pick out of Northeastern in 2023. … Kaden Hollow reached base three times with a single and two walks. Now in his second stint to provide depth for the TinCaps this year, the 24-year-old corner player has a slash line of .300/.353/.500 with three extra-base hits and seven RBI in nine High-A games.

Key Statistics: DH Kavares Tears 2-for-3, 2 2B, 3 RBI, BB; C Carlos Rodriguez 1-for-4, 3B, 3 RBI; 3B Zach Evans 1-for-3, BB, SB (11); 1B Kale Fountain 1-for-3, RBI, SB (2); SS Cobb Hightower 0-for-3, 3 R, 2 SB (6); RHP Bryan Balzer 3 IP, H, 2 BB, 4 K; RHP Kannon Kemp (W, 2-3) 5 IP, 5 H, 5 K; RHP Johan Moreno 1 IP, 2 K
Prospect Watch: Bryan Balzer, Kannon Kemp, and Johan Moreno combined to blank the Quakes on six hits. Balzer, 20, turned in his best start since missing a month with arm discomfort, tossing three innings and punching out four. The 2023 international free agent impressed many people inside and outside the organization with his athleticism and velocity coming into the season. However, he is still learning how to pitch after working primarily as a hitter in high school in Japan. … After giving up five runs against Visalia in his last appearance, Kemp delivered his best performance of the season, working around five singles over five innings. The big righty from Texas, who earned mid-third-round money out of high school in the 2023 draft, has had mixed results after shoulder injuries kept him from making his professional debut until this year. Working with a short arm action, the 20-year-old is still working to get his fastball velocity back up to where it reportedly sat late in his senior year. While encouraging, he has gone at least five innings in eight of his 11 appearances across two levels this year, he has posted a 5.09 ERA with 38 strikeouts across 53 innings. … With the pitching staff cruising, the Storm got on the board in the fourth inning on Carlos Rodriguez’s bases-clearing triple. Rodriguez has produced well in his second go-around with the Storm, posting a .910 OPS in 16 games and 58 plate appearances. The 22-year-old from Venezuela didn’t reach full-season ball for the first time until last year and started back in the ACL this year before hitting his way back to Elsinore with a .357 batting average. The left-handed hitter has shown tools on both sides of his game, and is likely to get more action behind the plate down the stretch. … Kavares Tears added a pair of doubles and drove in three runs in his second multi-hit game of the month. The 22-year-old, who remains limited to the DH role because of a shoulder issue, raised his slugging percentage back up to .403 and now has his offensive production back up to league average. … Kale Fountain had a hit and stole his second base in six games for the Storm. In addition to holding the Nebraska high school home run record, the 6-foot-5, 225-pound Fountain is also the all-time leader in stolen bases.

Prospect Watch: The nightmare season for the ACL Padres pitching staff continued as the club gave up double-digit runs for the 24th time in 57 games. With the game tied at five in the sixth, Darlin Mendez entered the game and went walk, hit batter, walk before uncorking a wild pitch to break the tie. He allowed a single and another walk before he was pulled. All five batters scored as Jose Ortega followed and gave up a pair of hits, a walk, and two wild pitches of his own before the seven-run frame came to a merciful end. … Donte Grant, who was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Washington State in 2023, had a pair of hits and stole his 17th base in 21 attempts. He is now second on the team behind Luis De Leon. Grant, 20, has a .378 on-base percentage on the season, but he is only hitting .236 and has a slugging percentage of .346 in his first healthy campaign in the ACL. He should be in Lake Elsinore to finish out his season. … De Leon, 19, should also get a chance at The Diamond for the end of the year. The switch-hitting 5-foot-8 Dominican is leading the team with 56 hits and a .415 on-base percentage, but has only seven extra-base hits in 224 plate appearances.
